Drei Motteten Op. 39

Three Motets Op. 39 for female chorus and organ

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

opus 1: Veni Domine
Veni Domine et noli tardare!
Relaxa facinora plebi tuae,
et revoca dispersos in terram tuam.
Excita Domine potentiam tuam
et veni, ut salvos nos facias.

Datanglah, ya Tuhan dan jangan berlambat!
Ringankanlah penderitaan umat-Mu,
Dan persatukanlah yang tercerai berai di seluruh bumi.
Tunjukkanlah, ya Tuhan kekuatan-Mu
Dan datanglah untuk menyelamatkan kami.

opus 2: Laudate Pueri
Laudate pueri Dominum,
laudate nomen Domini.
Sit nomen Domini benedictum
ex hoc, nunc et usque in saecula.
Beati omnes, qui timent Dominum.
Qui ambulant in viis eius.

Pujilah, hai hamba-hamba Tuhan
Pujilah nama Tuhan.
Kiranya nama Tuhan dimasyhurkan,
Sekarang dan selama-lamanya. (Mzm 113,1-2)
Berbahagialah setiap orang yang takut akan Tuhan,
Yang hidup menurut jalan yang ditunjukkan-Nya. (Mzm 128,1)

Background of This Motets:

The Three Motets, op. 39, were composed in response
to a visit to the Church of Trinità dei Monti in Rome.
Mendelssohn wrote to his parents on 20 December
1830: “The French nuns sing there, and it is lovely beyond compare. …
Now, knowing that one is not allowed to see the singers,
I made a strange resolution to compose something for their voices,
of which I took quite ample notice.”
